11/30/2023 0 Comments Pinball petes fort collins![]() ![]() ![]() I've lived here long enough to see all the dirty underbelly of Ann Arbor and Michigan. The homes tend to be newer and lower cost per sq ft, and the local communities IMO have "enough" of what you might want out of a city, with Ann Arbor a 20-30 minute drive away. Since you work from home I would consider one of the surrounding communities: Chelsea, Dexter, etc. Ann Arbor is an excellent place to raise a family - very safe/low crime rates/excellent schools/etc.If you want a newer build you may have to look further outside of Ann Arbor in one of the townships. In Arizona it seems like everything is ~25 years old max, the rooms are all bigger, and the cost per sq ft is lower. Most homes within city limits were built 1950-1970 They are higher cost per square foot, and the rooms are smaller. The housing is very old, small, and expensive relative to Arizona. You mentioned hockey - the local hockey is excellent for all levels, and there is enough of a participating population to keep the costs down (availability of used equipment, access to plenty of rinks and nearby leagues, etc). The costs of the fancier restaurants aren't any worse than old-town scottsdale. Part of this is my diet - I feel I've lost out on the good Mexican and burger places, and picked up better pizza and mediterranean. There is a huge variety of excellent restaurants, but most of the time I prefer lower cost fast casual - There isn't as much here as there was in Arizona IMO. I've been disappointed by the food relative to Arizona. It's fairly easy to live within your means if you choose to, and there are plenty of low/no cost activities close by to enjoy. Aside from housing and taxes, I don't think Ann Arbor is very expensive.Maybe if you're used to Flagstaff politics it's at least similar, but compared to a conservative place like Scottsdale Ann Arbor is very liberal. Disagree with you on the local politics - Ann Arbor is very liberal.I'm an Arizona->Ann Arbor transplant (with a few places in-between). Ninja edit because I don’t know how to Reddit and paragraphs are hard. Thanks in advance for any and all replies. I’m interested in hearing all points of view, and appreciate any help you can provide by telling us some stuff about your town and community that may not be apparent to someone who has never been. From everything I’ve read, it checks all the eat schools, 4 seasons, politically moderate, good hockey, plenty to do all year round. I would appreciate any help that the great folks on this sub can provide in convincing my wife that Ann Arbor is a great place to raise a family. Older son plays hockey and is interested in sports and physical activity, the youngest is very into arts and crafts at the moment. She would prefer Colorado, and has also suggested Frederick MD or Annapolis.Ībout us. After lots of research, I am very interested in moving to Ann Arbor, however my wife has concerns, as she grew up in Southern California and is not a fan of winter (I’m from Canada, so I don’t share this concern). We currently live in Arizona, but are having trouble agreeing on where we want to live. We are a family of four considering relocating from Arizona, but are having trouble deciding on where we want to live.įrom everything I’ve read, Ann Arbor checks all the eat schools, 4 seasons, politically moderate, good hockey, beautiful scenery, great local businesses, plenty to do outdoors all year round and basically just an all around pretty cool place.
